SPACE - IKARIE SG1
Prologue
"Somewhere in a galaxy far away cruises the crew of the spaceship IKARIE SG1. They explore other worlds and discover civilizations and planets that could mark a new beginning."
The Silky Gang brand presents a comprehensive collection of silk scarves and jewellery that pays homage to the only Czech science fiction film, Ikarie XB1, which was the inspiration for Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the famous Space Odyssey. The aesthetics of the Star Trek franchise, the crazy and sexy Barbarella, the geometry of the circle and the clean design of the Bauhaus school and the morphology of rondocubism architecture were the cocktail from which all the artists who contributed to the collection drew.
The scarf collection IKARIE SG1
The clean and playful geometric design of the scarves shows the universe as a mysterious and magical place where new adventures await. It is a tribute to imagination and the desire to explore and discover. In the collection you will find not only silk scarves, but also "twilly" ribbons made of luxurious, organic quality silk twill, printed in the Como region of northern Italy. The hand-rolled edges with the so-called "French-style wrap" are a sign of high quality and unique design. The playful colour scheme not only complements the UNIVERSE - IKARIE SG1 kinetic jewellery collection, but also perfectly matches the Silky Gang SG MMM leather handbags and SG gloves.
AUTHORS OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS
KATEŘINA COUFALOVÁ
When Martina approached me to collaborate on this collection, I hesitated for a while. I mainly create scarf patterns on paper with watercolours and I had no experience with this kind of graphic design. But it was a challenge, and one not to be refused. I was very inspired by orbits, planets, space, solar systems and especially op-art. After many drafts, we chose the two best ones. One utilizes the thin lines of orbits and their planets, the other is based on the surface. Both designs are then made in both warm and cold combinations of colours.
MARTINA KARAFIÁTOVÁ
founder of the brand Silky Gang
In the case of the Ikarie SG1 collection I didn't start with scarf designs, but with an original jewellery collection instead. The addition of the silk squares and the narrow twilly scarves was the right finishing touch that smartly completed the whole concept. I approached illustrator Kateřina Coufalová to collaborate on the scarf design. She perfectly recreated all my artistic ideas. Our team was completed by one newcomer, illustrator and graphic designer Dominika Režová, whose work perfectly fit into this graphic collection. Seemingly, these geometric scarf patterns break away from the Silky Gang concept. But the opposite is true. In simple and playful combinations of circles, rectangles and squares you will discover our colourful and original silky SG universe.
DOMINIKA REŽOVA
I've been following the Silky Gang brand for a long time, long before I got into illustration. I had honestly never considered joining forces, so I was thrilled when Martina approached me with the offer to collaborate on a collection of scarves. Geometric patterns and schematization are something I like to bring into my illustrations myself, so Martina's theme of circles and space was close to my heart from the start. The main theme of the design is the search for composition and interrelationships between circles and shapes that complement and intersect each other. The search for perfect composition and symmetry is disturbed by the irregular distribution of the circle in the format. At the time Martina and I started working together, I was a fresh graduate of product design at the Faculty of Architecture in Bratislava. However, I have always been more into illustrations, art and advertising. That's why I moved to Prague after my studies, where I currently work as a freelance illustrator for several brands and agencies. Apart from illustrating, I also work as an art director at the advertising agency Leo Burnett.
