ONCE UPON THE TIME ...

there was a woman who wanted to have a baby. One day, a witch gave her a grain and told her to plant it. The woman obeyed her and a flower grew from the grain. And in the middle of it, woman saw a little girl, tinnier than a thumb. She called her Thumbelina and loved her very much. One night, an ugly toad sneaked into the house, looking for a bride for her son. She kidnapped the girl into a nearby swamp by a river and introduced her son to her as her bethroated. Thumbelina started to cry. Fish in the water pitied the girl. They bit the stem of the water lily on which she laid. The current took her and carried her down the river away from the toads. A maybug rescued Thumbelina from the water. Thumbelina was afraid of him, but he turned out to be nice. But he didn't want her at his house. Thumbelina spent the summer in a rose. She had to move as soon as the frost came. She ended up in a field mouse‘s hole. The mouse had a rich neighbor, a blind mole. She told Thumbelina to marry him, because she would be well off.The mole didn't like flowers that Thumbelina loved. She didn't like him at all, but he fell in love with her. So long he begged her to go to his underground kingdom until she obeyed him. As they walked down the corridors, they encountered a dying swallow. Thumbelina felt sad for her, she came to her every night and tried to look after her. As soon as the bird recovered, she flew away. The mole, meanwhile,  was not wasting any time in planning the wedding. When Thumbelina came out for the last time, on her wedding day, the swallow came to her and offered to save her. Thumbelina cheered. She climbed on swallow‘s back, she waved her wings and away they went. After a while they arrived to the land of eternal sun with beautiful flowers. The swallow put Malenka into one of white flowers. Malenka soon noticed that she had a neighbor - an elf, a prince of flowers. They fell in love quickly and had a wedding soon after that. All the fairies from the land gathered there, even the swallow came. So Malenka finally found a nice husband and lived with him happily ever after.there were a king and a queen who wished to have a baby. One day, the queen met an old woman in the garden. "I know your sorrow, my queen," said grandma. "I will help you, but you must promise to invite me to the baptism."

Based on a fairy tale by Brothers Grimm

ALŽBĚTA GÖBELOVÁ, AUTHOR OF THE ILLUSTRATION

ALŽBĚTA ABOUT HERSELF

I was born and raised in Ostrava. I spent my student years in Uherské Hradiště and in Zlín, where I graduated from animation. The result of my studies is a short ten-minute film „Ghostory“, which enabled me to travel  the world a little bit. After some time, I found my way into Prague, where I now live and work as a freelancer. I work not only in animation, but also illustration. For example, I have been working long-term with the „Manufaktura“ company or on a visual style of popular Czech songwriter Pokáč. I also enjoy making artworks for children, but I am grateful for every new challenge, ergo my work on the Silky Gang scarf. Although fairytale „Thumbelina“ is one of the lesser known (at least in Czech Republic), it has been my favorite since I was a kid, so I am very glad that I had the honor to work on this design. My inspiration is mainly nature, I love floral motifs and I love to draw animals, above all. I managed to get some of them on the scarf by the way, in the form of bees. Aside from drawing, I also love music, movies, travel, food and all living creatures, especially my little dog, who occasionally, when I get too busy with work, makes me go out again and forces me to notice how beautiful the world around me is."

MARTINA ABOUT ALŽBĚTA

"‚Romantic Elizabeth's artistic style, which is characterized by a certain tenderness and gentleness, seemed ideal for the motif of the not very well-known fairy tale Thumbelina. Despite some initial search for the right concept and composition to grasp the motive, we finally came to an agreement. I think that Elizabeth was given the poetical and cheerfulness that is hidden throughout the story. You have to look for Thumbelina hidden among the flowers. This also symbolizes Thumbelina´s journey through the world before finally finding his love. The abundance of fine details, bees and flowers refers to Elizabeth's relationship to nature and pleases many souls.."
